Chapter Thirteen
WIGGINS ROAD
It had been a long seven months, but the time had come to collect the child and take it home to Beggarâs Loop, integrate it into the family where it belonged. Earlier, Davey had been there for the toe-curling birth alongside the midwife, whoâd done a stand-up job of shutting Vanessa up by soothing her, the screeches and wails finally dying into grunts of determination as sheâd pushed the baby out. And thank fuck for that. Davey had wanted to punch the noisy bitchâs lights out at one point, anything to stop that infernal screaming. It had tunnelled into his eardrums and reverberated, doing his nut in.
The midwife, one Elizabeth Smith, aged forty-seven, married with three adult kidsâDavey had done a check on herâwas a fucking star. Heâd tipped her extra for her patience, her skill, and how sheâd encouraged Vanessa to feed the kid from a bottle sheâd prepared, not once admonishing her for not going down the breast-is-best route.
âSo long as theyâre fed, it makes no odds,â Elizabeth had said. âThat milkâs got all the baby needs in it anyway, so fuck what other people think. You do whatâs best for you, because God knows motherhood is hard enough as it is without flopping your tits out in public.â
Vanessa had opened her mouth, probably to say she wasnât going to enter motherhood in any shape or form, but Davey had interrupted, silencing the gobby mare with one of his savage looks.
âCheers, Liz,â heâd said. âNice to deal with someone who knows her onions.â
âYes, well, Iâve been doing this nigh on twenty-five years, soâ¦â
The next-door neighbour on the right, a Mr Ward, had been sent away for a week in the Moore holiday home in Margate, all expenses paid, and Mr Queen from the left had joined him. Friends, apparently, went out on the lash together, had known each other since university. Davey didnât care how they knew one another. Any noise would fall on deaf ears with them out of the way. The men had been happy to take a break from their nine-to-fives, happy to keep the reason for their little jaunt quiet, and Ward promised to bring back a stick of rock with DAVE running around the rim.
Davey didnât want any fucking rock, but whatever, so long as Ward and Queen were out of the way, that was all that mattered.
âIâm going to confide in you now, fellas. She got herself in with a rival gangster,â Davey had told them. âIf he finds out sheâs pregnant, heâll fuck her up, hence why sheâs not been going out and Iâve been bringing the shopping every week. Sheâs going to move away when itâs born, sheâll be gone by the time you get back, so if any heavies come round yours asking where she is, say you donât know, she must have moved out. Iâm going to keep her safe, but donât tell them that bit.â
Heâd handed them money and the keys to the holiday home.
âIâll collect those off you next week, lads.
